Shotgun H.O.R.S.E.

Back to the Range

It feels good to have a shotgun back in hand. The local clays ranges are beginning to reopen and after a number of months of lockdown it was past time to knock off the rust.

It seems like there is never anyone on the skeet range — sporting clays, trap and five-stand are the games of choice. But skeet targets fly much more like an upland flush and offer opportunities to get some good reps on a lonely range.

The standard game always seems a little bit dry to us. We like to add a level of competition and pressure to shotgunning to better simulate hunting scenarios. No matter the game, we always start safety on and low gun to better replicate a field scenario. We shoot clays as practice for days afield in the fall, not for scores.

If your home range doesn’t have sporting clays or you’re looking for a new challenge, don’t be afraid to throw away the scorecard and mix things up. On this day we brought some old school basketball to the skeet range — Around the World and H.O.R.S.E with shotguns made for a fun day burning powder and good practice.
